YUL BRYNNER (July 11, 1920 - October 10, 1985)
He was born Yully Borisovich Briner in Vladivostok, Russia and is one of eight people to win the Tony and later the Oscar for the same role (The King and I, 1952/1956).
John Sturges’ western The Magnificent Seven (1960) was an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s epic Seven Samurai (1954). Brynner portrays the leader of the seven, a role originated by Takashi Shimura.
Brynner’s character ‘Gunslinger’ in Westworld (1973) wears the same costume her wore in The Magnificent Seven. Westworld is a science fiction-thriller written and directed by Michael Crichton set in a theme park where a computer virus leads to the parks animatronic life running amok. Arnold Schwarzenegger modeled his cyborg terminator in The Terminator (1984) after Brynner’s ‘Gunslinger’.
Yul Brynner said he wanted to film a commercial to air after his death as an antismoking public service announcement. Brynner started smoking at age 12 and smoked as much as five packs a day.
